What is the biggest challenge facing education today?

on January 6, 2013

The biggest challenge facing education today? Good question! At this point the educational system just seems to perpetuate the uneducated. The simpler the lessons become and the less that actual reading, writing or arithmetic is required the more ignorant people the school system churns out.

ipad-vs-booksBy the time our two year old enters middle school, if not prior to that, pencil and paper is going to be a distant memory. Ancient to the extent that children are going to scratch there head when they are mentioned much like they do now when someone refers to a cassette tape.

I am all for progression and the wonders of technology but when it begins to completely abolish the act of actually opening up a text book, writing a paper and the social interaction that comes from a class room discussion, I am bothered. They have stopped reading books like Animal Farm or plays written by the greatest writers of all time such as Shakespeare, Edger Allen Poe, Frost. I am sure the list is much more extensive the point is even my generation has little to no idea how to properly use a Dictionary or what a Thesaurus is much less how to use it. Its disturbing. What is going to happen if the world crashes into a place where lights are back to being candles. No power you can’t plug in that IPad.

It worries me, my children are going to be plunged into a world where “BRB and TMI” is going to be considered proper words when writing. We are losing the charm of the english language, the arts and eventually imagination is going to be a thing of the past as well.

What is the biggest challenge facing education today? Well … maybe proper education is also a thing of the past.
